Mechano Growth Factor (MGF) is a splice variant of IGF-I first identified by Goldspink in 1996. This localized hormone is expressed in skeletal muscle following mechanical stress or injury, such as during resistance training. MGF plays a key role in initiating the muscle repair process by activating quiescent satellite cells, which are crucial for muscle regeneration and hypertrophy. It acts in a paracrine manner, with effects confined to the tissue where it is produced. Although various analogs exist—such as PEG-MGF and Goldspink MGF—none are approved drugs.
