Meldonium or Mildronate, was developed in the 1970s by Latvian chemist Ivars Kalvinsh. Initially used to promote growth in animal which became the treatment of myocardial ischemia, a role it still serves today. Meldonium is also prescribed in neurological clinics for its benefits on cerebral circulation and central nervous system functions. Ince reciently it has gained popularity among elite athletes in both power based and endurance sports. Meldonium is not legally available in the USA as it is not approved by the FDA, but it can be imported from suppliers in Eastern Europe.
