Meldonium, also known as Mildronate, is a synthetic compound developed to treat ischemic heart disease and improve blood flow. It functions by inhibiting carnitine biosynthesis, reducing fatty acid oxidation, and promoting glucose metabolism. Originally synthesized in Latvia in the 1970s, it gained popularity in sports for its potential to enhance endurance and recovery. Despite its medical applications, meldonium was classified as a performance-enhancing drug and banned by WADA in 2016 after it was found to improve athletic performance and recovery.
