Initially discovered in 1920, chorionic gonadotropin was recognized as a pregnancy hormone in the late 1920s and was later developed as a commercial product by Organon in the early 1930s. The hormone was originally extracted from animal pituitary glands, but technological progress in the 1940s led to the adoption of a urine filtration process using samples from pregnant women—a method still in use. Today, hCG plays a central role in infertility treatment and post-steroid hormone recovery, with reduced application compared to its once sweeping therapeutic claims.
