Human Growth Hormone was first introduced in clinical practice in 1958, extracted from the pituitary glands of cadavers. Though effective, this approach was halted in 1985 after it was linked to cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. That same year marked a turning point with the approval of somatrem, the first HGH made using recombinant DNA technology, by Genentech. While somatrem had a slightly different amino acid structure, it set the stage for somatropin, a fully bioidentical form of HGH. Somatropin remains the dominant version used in medicine and performance settings today.
