In the 1930s, testosterone’s short half-life posed therapeutic challenges. The creation of testosterone propionate in 1935, and its commercial release as Testoviron® by Schering AG in 1937, offered a solution by extending hormone activity through esterification. This compound became the dominant form of injectable testosterone into the 1950s and was also briefly sold in oral (buccal) form. Though later eclipsed by longer-acting esters, it remained available worldwide for decades due to its historical significance.
