Melanotan-2 is a synthetic peptide originally created as a tanning agent but later recognized for its proerectile effects. It binds centrally to melanocortin receptors, especially MC4R, triggering erections via CNS pathways. MT-II crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts independently of vascular tissue. Studies confirmed that nitric oxide mediates its peripheral effects. Clinical trials in men with psychogenic and organic erectile dysfunction showed high response rates and increased libido, positioning MT-II as a novel, centrally acting sexual dysfunction agent.
