Human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) is a fertility drug extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women. It contains both follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), making it distinct from recombinant FSH, which lacks LH activity. HMG is used in assisted reproductive technology (ART) to stimulate ovaries for egg production. The highly purified form (HMG HP) is clinically effective. Studies comparing HMG and r-hFSH show similar live birth rates, although r-hFSH may yield more eggs. Treatment choice depends on patient-specific characteristics.
