Introduced in the early 1980s, testosterone undecanoate represented a breakthrough in oral testosterone therapy. Marketed primarily as Andriol®, it used oil-based softgel capsules that enabled lymphatic absorption, offering a non-hepatotoxic oral alternative. Though never approved in the U.S., it became widely prescribed in Europe, Canada, and Latin America. Later formulations like Andriol® Testocaps® replaced refrigeration-sensitive versions, extending shelf life and simplifying logistics. Merck/MSD remains the principal global producer of the compound.
