First introduced by Flint Laboratories in 1955 as Synthroid. An artificial thyroid hormone called Synthroid Levothyroxine Sodium mimics natural T4 hormone. People often take this drug to replace a deficiency in their natural hormones, which can lead to low metabolism rates (hypothyroidism).
