Developed in an era of growing medical demand for safer anabolic agents, Oxandrolone emerged in 1962 as one of the few steroids with broad therapeutic potential. Marketed under the name Anavar by G.D. Searle & Co., it treated numerous conditions, from burn recovery to stunted growth. Its mild androgenic effect made it accessible to a wider range of patients. Despite its utility, backlash against steroid use in sports led to its market exit in 1989. A return came in 1995 through Bio-Technology General Corp. under the name Oxandrin, limited to orphan-designated treatment programs.
