From 1958 to 1985, HGH used in therapy was derived from the pituitary glands of deceased donors. Each dose required material from multiple individuals, making the process highly limited and biologically risky. In response to fatal contamination cases, the FDA halted this practice in 1985. That year, Genentech’s somatrem became the first recombinant HGH to gain approval. It was eventually succeeded by somatropin, which perfectly replicates the body’s natural hormone and is now the global standard for clinical and off-label HGH use.
