First described in 1962, Methyl-1-testosterone never became a prescription drug, despite strong lab results. It featured remarkable anabolic strength and a non-estrogenic profile but was passed over during drug commercialization. Forgotten for decades, it returned in 2003 as an OTC bodybuilding product in the U.S. Due to its exclusion from early steroid laws, it was briefly legal. Its effectiveness led to massive demand, but within two years, it was officially banned and placed under the Controlled Substances Act, ending its legal availability worldwide.
