Human Chorionic Gonadotropin entered the world of medicine in the early 1930s, after being identified as a key hormone produced during pregnancy. The Dutch company Organon introduced the first therapeutic product, eventually known as Pregnyl. At first, hCG was extracted from animal tissues, but this changed by the 1940s, when pharmaceutical labs began collecting it from the urine of pregnant women. Despite a wide range of early medical claims, today hCG is mostly used in fertility treatments and male hormone therapy.
