Drostanolone propionate entered the prescription market in the 1970s as a treatment for advanced breast cancer in women. Created by Syntex, it was sold in the U.S. under the name Drolban and in other countries as Masteron or Permastril. Its structure, based on dihydrotestosterone, offered strong anti-estrogenic effects without converting to estrogen itself. This made it uniquely suitable for medical and later non-medical performance uses. Its ability to enhance muscular definition with minimal water retention led to widespread adoption in contest bodybuilding cycles.
