Oxymetholone, marketed as Anadrol-50, was developed by Syntex in the early 1960s and quickly became known as one of the most potent oral anabolic steroids. Initially prescribed for treating anemia and severe catabolic conditions, it stimulated red blood cell production through increased erythropoietin levels. Despite strong anabolic potential, its use declined in the 1990s due to hepatotoxicity concerns. It was revived in 1998 for HIV-related wasting under Unimed Pharmaceuticals
