Stanozolol became available to U.S. physicians in 1962 as Winstrol, following its development by Winthrop and patenting by Sterling. Prescribed for weight loss, growth delay, and osteoporotic conditions, it gained clinical favor for being both orally effective and estrogen-resistant. Its high anabolic-to-androgenic ratio allowed use in sensitive patients. As regulations around steroids tightened in the U.S., production ceased, but it remained in demand elsewhere. Veterinary use persists, particularly in horses, where Winstrol is still employed for performance and recovery.
