Introduced by Schering AG in 1934, Mesterolone (Proviron®) became the first orally administered androgen used to treat male hormone deficiency. This early entry into the field of steroid medicine predated the widespread adoption of testosterone esters. Its design avoided estrogenic conversion and allowed for regular oral use, features that distinguished it from injectable therapies. Though no longer dominant in modern practice, it retained medical relevance in Europe and Latin America well into the 2000s.
