Mesterolone, sold as Proviron®, was introduced in 1934 by Schering AG, Germany. As one of the earliest synthetic androgens, it laid the foundation for oral hormone therapy in men. Unlike later anabolic steroids developed for muscle-building, Mesterolone was created primarily to address androgen deficiency. Its low aromatization risk and limited suppression of natural testosterone made it suitable for long-term treatment. Though absent from U.S. markets, it remained widely used in Europe and beyond for over seven decades.
