Among anabolic steroids introduced for therapeutic use, Oxandrolone distinguished itself early through its mild profile and clinical safety. First launched by G.D. Searle & Co. in 1962 under the name Anavar, it was used to treat muscle wasting and delayed growth. Approved across multiple countries, it became one of the most prescribed anabolic agents in its class. Concerns over misuse in sports, however, led to its withdrawal in 1989. It returned in 1995 as Oxandrin, now manufactured by Bio-Technology General Corp., and restricted to rare medical indications under orphan drug protection.
