Mesterolone, developed by Schering in 1934, became the first clinically available oral androgen, marketed as Proviron®. This innovation placed it at the forefront of early steroid research, appearing shortly before testosterone propionate and methyltestosterone. While not a strong anabolic, its use in hormone replacement therapy was supported by its safety and low suppression of endogenous hormones. It remained on the market for decades, particularly in Europe and South America, and is still prescribed under various trade names despite its absence from U.S. pharmaceutical listings.
