Among the earliest synthetic androgens, Mesterolone emerged in 1934 when Schering introduced it as Proviron®, an oral hormone replacement drug for men. This compound preceded key anabolic steroids and played a vital role in defining early clinical protocols for androgen deficiency. Despite its limited muscle-building capacity, Mesterolone’s minimal impact on pituitary suppression made it valuable for long-term treatment. Though it never gained U.S. approval, it was widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and Latin America throughout the 20th century.
