Nandrolone phenylpropionate was introduced by Organon in 1959 under the name Durabolin and became one of the first anabolic steroids widely used in modern medicine. It was initially prescribed for conditions such as chronic infection, trauma recovery, osteoporosis, and metastatic breast cancer. Its relatively short half-life required injections every 2–4 days, which made it less practical for long-term therapy. Still, its strong anabolic-to-androgenic ratio and limited estrogenic conversion gave it a broad safety profile. .
