Tamoxifen citrate, first synthesized by Imperial Chemical Industries in 1962, was initially studied as a contraceptive but failed in that application. It was later found to act as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), effectively blocking estrogen receptors in breast tissue. After promising clinical trials in the 1970s, it was approved in 1977 as Nolvadex for treating estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Over time, it also gained off-label use in sports medicine to reduce estrogenic side effects and restore hormonal balance following anabolic steroid cycles.
