G.D. Searle & Co. introduced Oxandrolone in 1962 under the brand name Anavar, designing it as a therapeutic agent for weight loss, catabolic illness, and pediatric growth failure. The drug’s mild androgenic impact and solid anabolic effect allowed wide clinical use. However, the rise of steroid-related controversy in sports contributed to its market withdrawal in 1989. Years later, it was reintroduced in the United States as Oxandrin by Bio-Technology General Corp., now reserved for orphan-designated conditions such as HIV-related cachexia and Turner syndrome.
