Anastrozole was developed as a third-generation aromatase inhibitor for treating estrogen-dependent breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It gained FDA approval under the trade name Arimidex. Its ability to block estrogen synthesis later made it popular in bodybuilding to control estrogenic side effects of anabolic steroids. While not part of traditional PCT, it can be used during cycles to prevent estrogen rebound. Historically, it marked a shift from older, less selective estrogen blockers to highly targeted aromatase inhibition.
