Modafinil is a CNS stimulant developed by Lafon Laboratories and was approved in 1998 under the brand name Provigil. It promotes energy and wakefulness through increased dopamine and alterations in GABA and glutamate activity. Its usage as a performance-enhancing drug started around 2000-2004 and was rather under the radar of authorities until the BALCO incident of 2004. It was then banned from use by the IOC, and a urine test detection was brought into practice, part of the regular doping checks. Modafinil is also used pre-workout to combat fatigue and enhance physical performance.
