Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) was first identified in 1920. Started being used in the field in 1931 when Pregnon was introduced by Organon and later renamed Pregnyl. The hormone was initially derived from animal tissues; however in the 1960s manufacturers shifted to extracting it from the women urine. HCG plays a role, in treating conditions, like hypogonadism and is also utilized by athletes to help replenish natural testosterone levels post steroid usage.
