Discovered in 1920, HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) was first developed as a drug by Organon under the brand name Pregnon in 1931. A dispute over trademarks resulted in the product being renamed Pregnyl in 1932, which remains available today. Initially produced from animal pituitary glands, HCG manufacturing shifted to using the urine of pregnant women by the 1940s. Athletes use HCG to restore testosterone production after anabolic steroid cycles.
