Testosterone propionate became the first long-acting testosterone preparation available for clinical use in 1937. Developed in response to testosterone's rapid clearance, its esterified form allowed for fewer injections and more stable blood levels. It played a central role in hormone therapy during the 1940s and was adopted by athletes by the early 1950s. Though no longer the most used ester, it continues to be produced today.
