Originally developed for hypertension, telmisartan is gaining recognition for its anticancer activity, especially in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In recent studies, it suppressed tumor growth and cell proliferation by halting the cell cycle in S-phase, linked to decreased expression of CDK2 and cyclin A2. Unlike in other cancers where it induces apoptosis, telmisartan's effect in ESCC is driven by cell-cycle regulation. It also reduces ErbB3 and TSP-1 expression, implicating its role in disrupting key growth and angiogenesis pathways, and signaling new potential in cancer therapeutics.
