Winthrop Laboratories introduced Stanozolol to the U.S. market in 1962 under the brand Winstrol. Unlike other anabolic agents, it did not convert to estrogen and provided a strong anabolic effect with oral bioavailability. Medical use included treatment of osteoporosis, wasting from chronic illness, and underdevelopment in children. Over time, regulatory tightening led to its U.S. removal. However, injectable and tablet forms continued to be produced in Europe and Latin America, especially for veterinary performance support in horses and livestock.
