Developed as a weight management drug, sibutramine hydrochloride (Meridia®) was widely used to assist in fat loss by suppressing appetite and stimulating metabolism. Clinical trials demonstrated its efficacy, with patients losing significant weight over 24 weeks. Despite these benefits, the FDA withdrew it from the U.S. market in 2010 due to cardiovascular risks, and Abbott Laboratories ceased production. While it remains a controlled substance in certain countries, it is no longer widely available for legal use .
