Developed by Schering in the mid-1960s, mesterolone entered medicine in 1966 as Proviron. Structurally, it is a modified form of DHT, resistant to liver breakdown, making it orally active. Its early clinical role was tied to treating low androgen states, sexual dysfunction, and certain fertility problems in men. Unlike most anabolic steroids, it was never intended to significantly increase muscle mass. Instead, mesterolone gained recognition for its androgenic profile and became a mainstay in European pharmaceutical markets.
