Oxymetholone is a 17α-alkylated oral steroid introduced to medical practice for anemia and wasting conditions. Although structurally related to dihydrotestosterone, it behaves quite differently—causing water retention and other estrogen-like effects. Reintroduced in the late 1990s for HIV-related cachexia, it showed excellent results in restoring lean body mass. However, liver toxicity and adverse effects on blood lipids continued to limit its broader use. Today, it remains available in select markets, primarily under the name Anadrol.
