Created during the 1960s push for safer anabolic steroids, Oxandrolone was released by G.D. Searle & Co. as Anavar in 1962. Its structure allowed for strong anabolic activity with minimal androgenic traits, enabling use in women and children. Applied to treat wasting, surgery recovery, and growth failure, it gained a broad clinical base. Nevertheless, steroid controversies in sports prompted Searle to halt production in 1989. In 1995, it reappeared as Oxandrin, under Bio-Technology General Corp., with orphan drug status for treating specific wasting syndromes and pediatric disorders.
