Designed with patient safety in mind, Oxandrolone was introduced in 1962 by G.D. Searle & Co. under the brand name Anavar. Intended to aid recovery from illness, surgery, or trauma, it offered a strong anabolic effect with limited androgenic impact. It found widespread use among adults and children alike. Despite its medical utility, the compound was removed from the market in 1989 due to increasing scrutiny of anabolic steroid abuse. In 1995, it was reintroduced as Oxandrin, targeted at orphan-designated conditions such as HIV wasting and stunted growth in pediatric patients.
