Initially created for therapeutic use, Oxandrolone was launched in 1962 by G.D. Searle & Co. under the name Anavar. It was intended for patients facing severe weight loss, post-operative recovery, or growth failure. Its unique design emphasized anabolic support with minimal androgenic influence. Although it was broadly distributed and well tolerated, mounting criticism of steroids in sport led to its discontinuation in 1989. The compound later returned in 1995 under the brand Oxandrin, produced by Bio-Technology General Corp., and approved for rare medical conditions through the orphan drug program.
