Drostanolone propionate, better known as Masteron, was first developed by Syntex in 1959, the same company responsible for early breakthroughs with compounds like methyldrostanolone and oxymetholone. It reached the pharmaceutical market in the 1960s, primarily through Lilly in the United States and other partners abroad. Unlike many anabolic steroids introduced at the time, drostanolone propionate was designed for use in female breast cancer therapy, capitalizing on its DHT-derived structure. Though later replaced by modern treatments, Masteron became notable both in medicine and, eventually, in athletic circles.
