Finasteride, a 4-azasteroid compound, is widely used to manage prostate enlargement and male pattern baldness. Launched as Proscar® in 1992 and later as Propecia® in 1997, it targets the enzyme converting testosterone into the more androgenic DHT. It has no direct androgenic or estrogenic activity and does not affect cortisol or cholesterol levels. Despite raising testosterone slightly, its inhibition of DHT may impair neuromuscular function and libido, leading to cautious use among athletes.
