Finasteride is a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor that is developed to prevent the transformation of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. First introduced in the USA under the brand name Proscar by Merck in 1992. Finasteride was initially approved for treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Its ability to lower DHT levels has also proven effective, in treating alopecia. This leading to release a reduced dose option introduced as Propecia in 1997. Male athletes have shown interest in Finasteride for its potential to decrease androgenic side effects associated with testosterone and certain derivatives.
