Originally launched as a human therapeutic in the 1960s, boldenone undecylenate was marketed under the name Parenabol before being withdrawn from medical practice. Its underlying structure is boldenone, a testosterone derivative patented by Ciba in 1949. The undecylenate ester allowed for slow release, and although it faded from human medicine, it later emerged as Equipoise for veterinary use. It proved effective in horses for supporting red blood cell production and appetite, and later found widespread use in athletic performance contexts.
