Unlike many anabolic steroids designed for livestock or military use, Oxandrolone was created from the start as a therapeutic agent for human medicine. Synthesized by G.D. Searle & Co. in 1962, it became available under the name Anavar. It was used to promote weight gain in patients recovering from surgery or chronic illness. Although it gained popularity for its safety, by 1989 its image suffered due to widespread athletic abuse. The compound was later revived under the brand Oxandrin in 1995 and restricted to approved indications under orphan drug legislation in the United States.
