Substance Overview and History

Minoxidil was first used around 1970s as a drug to treat high blood pressure. While using it, doctors noticed that some patients grew more hair. In result it led to making cream for hair loss (called androgenetic alopecia, or AGA). The 2% minoxidil cream was released in 1986, and a stronger 5% version came out in 1993. Even after many years of use, how minoxidil helps hair growth isn’t fully researched. It contains ingredients like propylene glycol, but a foam version without it was made to improve how well it works and reduce irritation.
