Liothyronine sodium, launched as Cytomel® in the 1950s, became the first synthetic triiodothyronine (T3) available for therapeutic use. It offered faster action and more consistent potency than animal-derived thyroid preparations. Its ability to directly raise the basal metabolic rate led to clinical use in hypothyroidism and, later, off-label adoption in physique sports. Bodybuilders often rely on liothyronine during cutting cycles for its fat-burning potential. Despite concerns over muscle loss, it remains a favored compound due to its direct activity and short half-life, allowing controlled metabolic modulation.
