Mesterolone was first marketed by Schering in 1934 as Proviron®, preceding many other anabolic agents in clinical use. Developed in Germany during the early wave of hormone research, it was originally intended as a treatment for androgen deficiency. Though weaker in anabolic action, its potent androgenic profile and negligible suppression of gonadotropin release gave it a long-standing role in male therapy. Following Schering’s acquisition by Bayer in 2006, Proviron remained available in several international markets.
