Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a gut-derived hormone secreted by L-cells after food intake. It enhances insulin release, suppresses glucagon, reduces appetite, and improves glucose metabolism. Via the GLP-1 receptor, it activates intracellular signaling pathways (cAMP, calcium), supporting cardiovascular, hepatic, neurological, and gastrointestinal health. GLP-1 analogs and dual agonists like tirzepatide are used to manage type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, and neurodegeneration by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.
