First brought to market by Syntex, oxymetholone gained FDA approval for anemia due to its effect on stimulating erythropoietin. Though it proved effective in clinical trials and was even reapproved for HIV wasting in the 1990s, it fell out of widespread use because of severe side effects, particularly liver strain. It is unique among DHT-derived steroids in producing estrogenic-like symptoms, making it both potent and pharmacologically unusual.
