Originally marketed as Anavar, Oxandrolone was created to provide anabolic effects without severe androgenic impact. It was widely prescribed to promote weight gain in patients recovering from surgery, trauma, or severe infections. By the 1980s, it became a preferred treatment for muscle wasting disorders and osteoporosis. Despite its therapeutic benefits, Searle discontinued Anavar in 1989 due to its association with steroid abuse. It reemerged in 1995 as Oxandrin under Bio-Technology General Corp., focusing on HIV-related cachexia and Turner's syndrome treatment .
