Oxandrolone, a synthetic derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), was developed in 1962 by G.D. Searle & Co. as a mild anabolic steroid intended for patients recovering from severe trauma, infections, and surgery. Marketed under the name Anavar, it was distinguished by its low androgenic activity and ability to promote lean muscle mass without significant water retention. Despite its medical benefits, it was discontinued in 1989 due to concerns over steroid misuse. It was later reintroduced in the 1990s as Oxandrin, targeting HIV-related muscle wasting and severe weight loss conditions .
